Visual storytelling

Light &
Shadow

A collection of moments captured in time — where composition meets emotion and the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

The photographer

Artist Statement

For most of my life, I have kept a camera nearby. I prefer a "light and bright" set up, that allows for "of the moment" capture. Although many of my favorite photos involve classic "street photography," I dislike the term because it suggests an urban environment. I take the same approach to capturing images whether I am walking down a crowded city block, hiking an empty forest trail, or scaling a jagged mountain face.

I constantly look for the image that is immediately interesting or beautiful, but also holds a tension, a paradox, or twist within. I use uncommon, unusual, or unexpected subject matters, and seek the energetic image that automatically captures the viewer's gaze. I use bright colors, interesting viewing angles, and curving or converging image lines to hold attention, while a story in each photo begins to unfold. Every photo should come alive, tell you a short tale, and take you somewhere else, if even for a moment.

Bio

I am a pediatric ophthalmologist by profession, but a lifelong photographer. My photos have always been shared by my family and friends, but I am now presenting my photos as public work. My photos have appeared in numerous small business social media and websites.

One photo was selected by Backroads Travel for honorable mention, published in 2021, and used again in their 2025 travel catalog. More were published in a Chicago wedding magazine in 2021. In 2024, I had three photos selected for exhibit in three separate competitions at the Atlanta Photography Group gallery, and a fourth in 2025.

My images are concentrated in the areas of street, landscape, adventure, and portrait photography. I often like to find crossover in these areas.
